Nix Northwest - Drive Slow

September 30th 2020

‘Drive Slow’ will be the first single release from rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist Nix Northwest, from his up and coming project entitled ‘Xin’s Disappearance’. The single will be released with an accompanying video directed by Nix. The single grapples with an overwhelming desire to escape one’s surroundings and problems. It deals with addiction within Nix’s family and the mistakes made by his father, accompanied by his mother’s warnings not to head down the same road. The song was birthed on a trip to LA where Nix met producer Cowboy Lansky and together they planted the seed that would become ‘Drive Slow’.

Coming back to London with only one scrappy verse, a rough instrumental and half a hook, Nix remade the entire instrumental, wrote the rest of the song and then recorded and produced it himself all in his bedroom studio. ‘Xin’s Disappearance’ follows its protagonist ‘Xin’, as he attempts to flee his home city in a bid to shed the unnecessary angst and worry that can plague a young persons mind in such an environment. After packing up his things heading on this supposed one-way trip, Xin is met with a number of characters and experiences which force him to question the real intentions behind this trip: in escaping the stress and bustle of the city Xin has also become detached from the things that matter to him – family, friends, sanity and love. It starts to become clear that he is escaping issues that he should be dealing with head on. Xin’s Disappearance is a reflection of Nix’s life and experiences – ‘Xin’ being Nix in reverse. The project tackles both the darker themes of vice, breakups and escapism, as well as uplifting topics like self-care, gratitude and self-belief. Conceptually, the project will be left open ended in order to allow a bridge into the follow up project entitled ‘Xin’s Return’, which is well underway.

Despite the challenging times we have faced in 2020, Nix’s debut release entitled ‘Life’s A Bitch, I Just Need An Early Night’ has been gaining momentum, garnering 2 million Spotify streams in the 10 months since its release and is continuing to grow. On top of having success with streaming, Nix’s debut headline show in November 2019 - to celebrate the release of ‘Life’s A Bitch’ - completely sold out Notting Hill Arts Club without any official promotion. Despite having a number of gigs and a small tour cancelled due to Covid-19, Nix will be bouncing back on the live scene with a bang as soon as restrictions are lifted, accompanied by his full-live band. With interest from both major and independent labels, as well as a growing cult fan base, the foreseeable future is looking extremely exciting for the twenty-three year old London-born artist.
